De Villiers suspended for two weeks
South African wing Jean de Villiers has been suspended for two weeks for a dangerous tackle during the Springboks' 17-31 loss to New Zealand in their Tri-Nations test in Wellington on Saturday.
De Villiers had been cited for an alleged lifting tackle on All Blacks winger Rene Ranger in the 27th minute of the match.
He appeared yesterday before judicial officer Dennis Wheelahan, who found de Villiers guilty after considering submissions from the player, his representatives and video evidence, governing body SANZAR said in a statement.
De Villiers was suspended until August 1 and will miss the Springboks' next Tri-Nations match against Australia on Saturday in Brisbane.
He is the second Springboks player to be banned in this year's competition. Lock Bakkies Botha was suspended for nine weeks after he admitted headbutting All Blacks' scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan in the 12-32 loss last week in Auckland.
Wheelahan said he took into account de Villiers' exemplary disciplinary record which spanned 10 years and 60 tests.
Meanwhile, wingers Drew Mitchell and Cameron Shepherd were added to Australia's squad.
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans had originally named a 28-man squad for the Tri-Nations and surprisingly dropped Mitchell after he had appeared in all four of Australia's tests in June. Deans had said at the time he would add an additional two players before their opening Tri-Nations clash with South Africa.
Mitchell and Shepherd had trained with the Wallabies this week.
