Drunk rugby league coach fines himself

BRAD Fittler, a former Australia rugby league test captain and coach of the Sydney Roosters club, fined himself 10,000 Australian dollars (US$8,120) yesterday after drunkenly trying to get into a woman's hotel room.

Fittler, who played 14 tests for Australia from 1991 to 2001, was found wearing only shorts and heavily intoxicated early on Friday by police after the female occupant of the room made a complaint. Fittler's Roosters, in last place in the National Rugby League, lost 22-24 to the North Queensland Cowboys later yesterday, the team's 11th defeat in 14 matches. "I take this opportunity to apologize for my behavior on Thursday night, I brought embarrassment to the club, myself and my family," Fittler said earlier. "I am disappointed with myself and apologize unreservedly to the occupants of the room who I disturbed. My behavior was unacceptable and I have fined myself A$10,000." The club said the money would be donated to a Salvation Army women's refuge charity.
