Force edge Waratahs for season's 1st win
FULLBACK Dave Harvey, the nephew of Australian cricket great Neil Harvey, scored 16 points as the injury-hit Western Force edged New South Wales 21-20 in Sydney in Super 15 rugby yesterday.
It was the Perth-based Force's first win of the season in four matches while the Waratahs lost for the third time in four matches, their worst start to a Super season in 15 years.
Winger Samu Wara crossed for the match-winning try in the 64th minute. Adam Ashley-Cooper and Tom Kingston scored tries for the Waratahs while Daniel Halangahu kicked two penalties and two conversions.
The 29-year-old Harvey, on a short-term contract as the Force struggle to cope with the many injuries to their squad, scored a try and kicked three penalties and a conversion.
It was a fully deserved win for the Force, who controlled possession and territory for long periods and bossed the breakdown against a lethargic Waratahs side.
Earlier, replacement flyhalf Chris Noakes kicked a 74th-minute penalty which clinched a 19-17 win for Otago over the Wellington Hurricanes, leaving the Highlanders unbeaten after four rounds.
All Blacks flyhalf Colin Slade had previously scored a try among 16 points for the Highlanders who had to stage a late rally to retake the lead despite overwhelming shares of territory and possession.
A 69th-minute penalty to talented rookie flyhalf Beauden Barrett had given Wellington a 17-16 lead with 11 minutes remaining. But Noakes' final goal from a difficult angle regained the lead and sealed the Highlanders' win.
