Genia out for 6 months with knee injury

AUSTRALIA stand-in captain Will Genia is expected to be sidelined for up to six months after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee late in the Wallabies' 26-19 win over South Africa in a Rugby Championship match in Perth on Saturday.

Genia's injury follows that of regular captain James Horwill (hamstring) and the man who replaced him, David Pocock (knee), who were both already ruled out for the rest of the series.

Genia, who underwent scans yesterday at a Perth hospital, will be replaced for the match against Argentina on the Gold Coast on Saturday by veteran halfback Brett Sheehan.

The 24-year-old Genia, who is not likely to return until the start of next year's Super 15 season for the Queensland Reds, was unsure when asked about the injury after the game.

"I took the high ball, it twisted and I heard a few cracks," Genia said.

Wallaby flyhalf Quade Cooper spent seven months on the sidelines recuperating after also rupturing his right ACL in the World Cup third-place playoff against Wales in October 2011. Cooper missed most of the 2012 Super 15 season for the Reds.

Nathan Sharpe is expected assume the Australia captaincy for now.
