Hanson and Carter replace Wallabies duo
JAMES Hanson and Sam Carter were called up to Australia’s Rugby World Cup squad yesterday as injury replacements for No. 8 Wycliff Palu and lock Will Skelton.
The 33-year-old Palu and Skelton, 23, were hurt in Sunday’s 65-3 win against Uruguay in Pool A.
Palu, who had missed the opening match against Fiji, went off at halftime after picking up a hamstring injury in what likely will turn out to be his last game for Australia.
“It’s a sad day in that regard,” Australia coach Michael Cheika said. “The way he came back from injury to play in this tournament has been very special for the players. He’s got a quiet but strong influence in the team and he’ll be sorely missed.”
Skelton was replaced midway through the second half after sustaining a pectoral injury and will consult a surgeon when he returns home.
“From a team perspective, they both play important roles in the side and it is disappointing that we need to replace players in our squad,” Cheika said. “Very few players have the opportunity to play for the Wallabies, let alone at a Rugby World Cup, so from that perspective I’m really gutted for them.”
Hanson, 27, who is a hooker, made his debut in 2012 and has 10 test caps, while Carter, 26, has played 12 times since making his debut last year. Both will be playing in their first World Cup and have a huge game coming up against England on Saturday.
The duo played in Australia’s warm-up test over the United States at Soldier Field shortly before the tournament got under way.
“Both James and Sam have been part of the team at various stages this season and I am confident they will be able to step up,” Cheika said.
