Highlanders hold on to edge Waratahs
THE Otago Highlanders edged the New South Wales Waratahs 18-17 in an intense and bruising Super Rugby encounter in Dunedin yesterday to remain the only team with a 100 percent record in the New Zealand conference.
Playing their second successive match at their new enclosed stadium, the Highlanders made it three wins from three this season with a typically physical performance and tries either side of halftime from scrumhalf Aaron Smith and John Hardie.
The Waratahs led for much of the game, largely through Daniel Halangahu's kicking, and could have nicked a victory at the end but their last possession ended with a turnover and Otago was able to scramble the ball messily into touch.
"Our ball security let us down today but we snuck away for a win and it was bloody great," said Highlanders skipper Jamie Mackintosh.
Elsewhere, the Queensland Reds overcame a stiff challenge from the Melbourne Rebels to snatch a narrow 11-6 victory in Brisbane and maintain their 100 percent winning start to the season, with second-year winger Dom Shipperley scoring the only try of the match.
Also, an ice-cool Christian Lealiifano calmly kicked a last-minute penalty to give the ACT Brumbies a 24-23 victory over the Cheetahs in Canberra.
The South Africans led from the 18th minute - when Willie le Roux scored a brilliant try from a set move - until the Brumbies center slotted his fourth penalty from four attempts with the hooter already having sounded. Brumbies wingers Henry Speight and Pat McCabe also scored tries either side of halftime.
