Hurricanes, Chiefs stay unbeaten as Reds suffer

THE Wellington Hurricanes and the Waikato Chiefs maintained their unbeaten start to the Super 14 season with near-identical victories yesterday.

The Hurricanes beat South Africa's Lions 31-18 at Westpac Stadium while All Blacks winger Lelia Masaga scored a try off a lost lineout by the Western Force to clinch Waikato's 37-19 victory in Perth.

Also, the Auckland Blues overcame a halftime deficit in often heavy rain to beat Queensland 27-18 and spoil the Reds' return to their traditional Ballymore home in Brisbane.

In Wellington, Hurricanes flyhalf Piri Weepu scored seven points, scampering over the line shortly before half-time after receiving a Rodney So'oialo pass and then converting after captain Andrew Hore scored a second-half try.

Trailing 7-21 at half-time, the Lions clawed back to within six points shortly after the break when No. 8 Todd Clever, the competition's first American player, spun over the line on the left hand side before fullback Earl Rose scored a penalty.

However, hooker Hore halted the comeback with an exhilarating charge, cantering over the line after shrugging off three tacklers and sidestepping another to put the Hurricanes 26-15 ahead.

Another penalty

Rose pegged the margin back to 10 with another penalty before the contest descended into a scrappy affair as both sides pushed for further scores but fell short.

Hurricanes winger David Smith sealed the win, however, rushing over the line with just over 10 minutes left after a chain of passes from center Ma'a Nonu and fullback Cory Jane.

Michael Paterson scored the Hurricanes' first of four tries after stealing the ball from the lineout to open an 11-0 lead after two earlier penalties. The Hurricanes earned a bonus point from their third win in as many matches for scoring four or more tries.

In Perth, the Chiefs led 13-6 at halftime on Hika Elliot's try, the only five-pointer of the first 40 minutes.

All three of Waikato's wins have been on the road - a 19-18 decision over the Sharks in Durban in the first round and a 72-65 victory over the Lions in Johannesburg last week in the highest-scoring Super match.

The loss was the Force's third in a row. The last-place side is the only team in the tournament without a point after three rounds.

In Brisbane, Wallabies halfback Will Genia scored a try in the first two minutes of his inaugural match as captain to help the Reds to a 13-8 halftime lead, but the Blues scored three second-half tries.

All Blacks lock Anthony Boric and halfback Albie Mathewson dotted down and Rudi Wolf added the clinching third with a minute left.
