Italy shines as Ireland's hopes soar
IRELAND revived its Six Nations title hopes and ended England's chances of an unlikely grand slam with a narrow 20-16 win at Twickenham on Saturday.
Tommy Bowe scored his second try of the game with just six minutes left in London as Ireland bounced back from its 10-33 pummeling in France two weeks ago to go level with England in the standings on four points.
Ireland now has the chance to continue its revival in Dublin against Wales on March 13, when England heads to Scotland. The Scots will be desperate to hand England one of its periodic embarrassments at Murrayfield after losing 12-16 away to Italy on Saturday.
France remains on course for a first grand slam since 2004 after winning 26-20 against Wales on Friday.
"We looked at the France game afterward and thought we didn't take our chances. Today we did." Ireland's Jamie Heaslip said.
Jonny Wilkinson had just kicked England into the lead for the first time at 16-13 when Bowe broke the defensive line from a simple lineout move to score his second try of the match.
Keith Earls scored the visitor's other try, but Ireland's victory mostly owed to a defensive performance in which it made 99 tackles and missed just one.
England could not find a way through often enough despite improving on a dour 17-12 win over Italy last week. Prop Dan Cole scored the hosts' only try midway through the second half.
In Rome, Italy and Scotland were tied 9-9 as Mirco Bergamasco and Dan Parks traded kicks until scrumhalf Pablo Canavosio scored in the second half.
It was Italy's first win in the Six Nations since beating Scotland almost two years ago.
