McAlister in contract dispute

ALL Blacks flyhalf Luke McAlister must buy his way out of his current contract if he wants an early release to join the French club Toulouse, the New Zealand Rugby Union said.

McAlister, who missed selection on Sunday in the All Blacks' Tri-Nations squad, found himself at the center of a tug of war when he failed to attend a training run with his North Harbour provincial team.

After first saying his absence was due to the illness of one of his children, McAlister indicated through his agent, his father Charlie McAlister, that he was seeking an early release to take up a three-year contract with Toulouse.

Neil Sorenson, general manager of professional rugby for the New Zealand Rugby Union, said McAlister was contracted to play for North Harbour in the National Provincial Championship which starts this week. His contracts with New Zealand and North Harbour expire at the end of the year and Sorenson said McAlister or Toulouse must pay the value of his remaining contract - an estimated 60,000 New Zealand dollars (US$50,000) - or he must remain until the contract ends.

"We'll be looking for a release payment if Toulouse gets him. If we don't get it from Toulouse, we want it from the player," Sorensen said. "As far as we're concerned he's contracted until the end of the year to New Zealand and North Harbour. We'll contemplate an early release but only after we've agreed terms. We're in negotiations."

Sorenson indicated the New Zealand union was disappointed McAlister was planning to quit New Zealand for a second time. McAlister played for two years for England's Sale Sharks after the 2007 World Cup.
