SCOTLAND rugby coach Andy Robinson resigned yesterday after more than three years in the job following a 15-21 home loss to Tonga a day earlier.
Robinson had been under contract through the 2015 World Cup, but Scotland has lost 10 of its last 13 tests, including every match in the 2012 Six Nations.
"I believe I have left the team in a better position than when I took over and have great confidence in the players and the coaches for the future," Robinson said. "I am very disappointed by our recent results but I have belief in the players to develop into a winning team."
The loss to Tonga was the 19th in Robinson's 35-match reign, and Scottish Rugby's chief executive Mark Dodson described the recent results as "very disappointing".
"Following the sequence of recent results during the EMC autumn tests a change in head coach is required to take the team forward and build towards the Rugby World Cup in 2015," Dodson said.
"Andy is an outstanding leader and a fine coach and we wish him well," he added.
Before taking charge of Scotland in 2009, Robinson had been head coach of Edinburgh for two seasons.
But he is better known for having led England to only nine victories in 22 tests over two years after taking over from Clive Woodward following the 2003 World Cup win.
