S. Korea beats HK with dramatic late try
A DRAMATIC late try gave South Korea a 21-19 win over last year's runner-up Hong Kong, China, in the Asian Five Nations yesterday, while defending champion Japan walloped the United Arab Emirates.
South Korea, in its first match back in the top division, was forced to dig deep in the second half as the hosts rallied after a poor opening period, dominating possession and territory.
Hong Kong looked to have the game sewn up when leading 19-14 with less than three minutes to go, but center Park Noh-hoon powered through to touch down and fullback Kim Won-yong converted for the jubilant South Koreans.
It was a shattering blow for Hong Kong, which came into this year's tournament with hopes of challenging perennial champion Japan for the top spot in Asian rugby.
"We're very, very happy and all credit to the players," said delighted South Korean head coach Seo Chun-oh.
Earlier, Japan, which is unbeaten in the Five Nations since 2008, racked up 16 tries, including six by 18-year-old Yoshikazu Fujita, in the 106-3 demolition of the hopelessly out-classed UAE in Fukuoka.
Japan beat Kazakhstan 87-0 in its opening game of the tournament in Almaty last week.
