Sharks bite Brumbies to end long Canberra drought
FULLBACK Riaan Viljoen scored two tries as the Sharks beat the ACT Brumbies 29-26 in Super 15 rugby in Canberra yesterday, the South African side's first win in the Australian capital since 1998.
The Sharks led 29-19 with 10 minutes to go before Nic White scored for the Brumbies. After the siren sounded, ACT played on for another five minutes and gained 50 meters before turning the ball over to end the match.
Willem Alberts and Lwazi Mvovo scored the other Sharks tries and Frederic Michalak kicked three conversions and a penalty.
Jesse Mogg scored the other ACT try and Christian Lealiifano added 16 points with four penalties and two conversions.
The win evened the Sharks' record at 3-3 while the Brumbies are 3-2.
"We were very happy to put up a win here, it's been a while," said Sharks captain Keegan Daniel.
Brumbies captain Ben Mowen credited the Sharks with a strong match. "I would like to see more patience from our side and to trust our systems. But the Sharks were very good on the night."
Elsewhere yesterday, the visiting Cheetahs of South Africa fought back after a withering first-half assault to storm home 47-38 over the Wellington Hurricanes while a shaven-headed Wakaito Chiefs team bided its time before smashing the New South Wales Waratahs in the second half to win 30-13 in Hamilton, New Zealand.
The Chiefs players, sporting sheer hair-cuts to raise money for charity, scored two tries after the break and conceded only three points to notch their fourth win of the season from five matches.
In a late match, the Western Force swatted aside the Queensland Reds 45-19 in an all-Australian clash in Perth.
