Shipperley powers Reds past Waratahs

WINGER Dom Shipperley dashed 80 meters for a try in the last play of the game to give defending champions the Queensland Reds a stunning 25-21 win over the New South Wales Waratahs in Super 15 rugby in Sydney yesterday.

Queensland seemed likely to start its first-ever title defense with a loss after former Cheetahs scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius sneaked over its goalline in the 67th minute to lift the Waratahs to a 21-15 lead. New South Wales defended that lead for 13 minutes in a typically fierce contest between interstate Australian rivals before Shipperley snatched the match with his try after the final hooter.

Flyhalf Mike Harris converted to finish with seven goals from seven attempts in the match to extend his record to 15 from 15 in his short Super 15 career.

In Hamilton, New Zealand, Otago's Aaron Smith and Phil Burleigh scored second-half tries as the Highlanders came from 10 points down to beat the Waikato Chiefs 23-19.

The Highlanders trailed 9-19 nine minutes into the second half but tries to replacement scrumhalf Smith and inside center Burleigh turned the game in Otago's favor.

Waikato flyhalf Aaron Cruden, who suffered a serious knee injury in the Rugby World Cup final in October, marked his return by kicking five goals from five attempts for 14 points for the Chiefs.

Cruden converted Lelia Masaga's first-half try and added four penalties but his effort couldn't save the Chiefs from defeat in their opening match of the season.

On Friday, the Bulls beat the Sharks in an all-South African encounter in Pretoria.
