South Africa claims Adelaide 7s crown
DEFENDING champion South Africa beat Kenya 26-7 yesterday to claim the Adelaide Sevens rugby title and increase its lead in the IRB Sevens World Series.
It was Kenya's first final in more than 50 Sevens World Series appearances. On Saturday in the final match of pool play, Kenya edged South Africa 15-14. South Africa went into the three-day tournament at the Adelaide Oval with 84 points in the series, 16 better than second-place England, and picked up 20 points for yesterday's win. Adelaide was the sixth of eight tournaments on the international Sevens circuit, with the remaining two at London and Edinburgh. Meanwhile, Australian Rugby Union chief John O'Neill said Adelaide may bid for the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup. "There's no firm commitment from anyone but it's been the subject of a bit of discussion over a few oysters today," O'Neill said of a 2013 bid.
