Stormers crush Reds; Highlanders edge Blues
THE Cape Town-based Stormers recovered from their first loss of the season to dominate the defending champion Queensland Reds 23-13 in Super 15 rugby in Brisbane yesterday.
Flyhalf Peter Grant scored a try and kicked three penalties and two conversions to lead the Stormers with 18 points. They led 17-3 at halftime.
The Stormers, who lost 24-31 last week to the Canterbury Crusaders in New Zealand, improved to 7-1 for the season while the Reds are 4-4 and in danger of falling well behind the leaders in the Australian conference.
Rookie flyhalf Sam Lane suffered a suspected season-ending knee injury and rising center Ben Tapuai broke his collarbone within the opening seven minutes for the Reds.
In Dunedin, New Zealand, former All Blacks flyhalf Mike Delany marked his return to Super 15 rugby by kicking 20 points as the Otago Highlanders beat the Auckland Blues 30-27 yesterday in a match which saw eight lead changes.
Delany rejoined the Highlanders from a Japanese club as a mid-season replacement for another All Blacks flyhalf, Colin Slade, who was ruled out for the season with a broken ankle.
The one-test All Black made an indelible mark on the match, giving up an early try from a handling error but immediately atoning by creating the Highlanders' first try. He then kicked a conversion and six penalties in a match in which his goalkicking duel with Auckland's Gareth Anscombe saw the lead repeatedly change hands.
Yesterday's win was the Highlanders' sixth from eight games, lifting them to second place behind the Waikato Chiefs in the New Zealand conference.
