Tuilagi shines as England edges Wales
ENGLAND may have unearthed the dangerous center it has been seeking for so long during its 23-19 World Cup warmup victory over Wales on Saturday in Samoa-born 20-year-old Manu Tuilagi who capped a lively debut with a well-taken try.
Tuilagi, who qualified through residency even though four of his brothers have played for Samoa, burst through three tackles early in the second half for the sort of score England's midfield has struggled to find since Will Greenwood retired seven years ago.
James Haskell also scored a try and Jonny Wilkinson kicked a penalty, two conversions and two drop goals as England, playing in its controversial all-black "away kit" completed a hat-trick of World Cup warmup wins over the Welsh following successes of 2003 and 2007.
However, manager Martin Johnson will not be happy to have been outscored three tries to two as its early second-half 20-7 lead was chipped away during a Welsh comeback.
The teams meet again in Cardiff next week before England completes its warmup program against Ireland in Dublin on August 27. Wales hosts Argentina on August 20.
In Edinburgh, Scotland center Joe Ansbro scored his first international try with four minutes left to give his team a 10-6 win over Ireland.
Jonathan Sexton had put Ireland 6-3 ahead in a poor game with two penalties but Scotland replacement Nick De Luca put Ansbro into space, leaving the center to side step and run in from 30 meters out. Ruaridh Jackson converted, with Chris Paterson having scored Scotland's other points with a 49th-minute penalty.
