US advances on day of shocks at Sevens
THE United States prospered on a day of upsets at the New Zealand Rugby Sevens yesterday, topping a pool for the first time in 15 years and for only the second time in the history of the World Series.
France upset World Series leader South Africa and the day continued with a series of upsets which meant quarterfinal places were often decided by point differentials rather than win-loss records. South Africa needed to score four tries and beat the United States in its final match to reach the quarterfinals and did so, eliminating France.
The other teams progressing to the quarterfinals were Kenya, Scotland, Fiji, Australia and England plus host New Zealand.
