Wallabies appoint Cheika head coach
Michael Cheika has taken over as Wallabies head coach on a three-year contract and will remain in charge of the New South Wales Waratahs next season in a deal rushed through before the Australian squad leaves on a five-match European tour.
Cheika’s appointment was confirmed yesterday, less than four days after Ewen McKenzie announced the end of his tumultuous 15-month stint as coach in the wake of Australia’s last-minute 28-29 loss to New Zealand last Saturday.
Cheika, the Australian-born son of migrants from Lebanon, guided the Sydney-based Waratahs to their first Super Rugby title this season. The 47-year-old will have no time to settle in, with the squad leaving tomorrow for a tour, including tests against England, France, Wales and Ireland and a match against the Barbarians on Australia's last trip to Europe ahead of the 2015 World Cup.
