Wallabies top Blues
AUSTRALIA restored some morale following the test loss to Scotland by thumping the Cardiff Blues 31-3 at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday.
Winger Kurtley Beale scored at the end of each half, and all four Wallabies tries were converted by fullback James O'Connor, who tallied 11 points.
"The boys played with spirit and played as one, which was good to see," said coach Robbie Deans. "We certainly hope it will rub off on Saturday against Wales. We're lucky to have that opportunity, rather than having to go into the summer on the back of a loss to Scotland."
Center Ryan Cross, the only starter backing up from the stunning 8-9 defeat to Scotland at Murrayfield last Saturday, scored the opening try and set up Beale's first, and Luke Morahan dotted down on debut. Morahan, who joined the touring party last week as the replacement for Stirling Mortlock, was one of three to make their Wallabies debuts, along with scrumhalf Richard Kingi and flyhalf Matt Toomua.
But Toomua's debut lasted only until the second minute when he broke his jaw.
Ben Blair kicked Cardiff ahead a minute later, but from the restart O'Connor split the defense and Cross finished off. Australia's defense was tested for a period until just before halftime, when Cross counterattacked off a spilled ball and O'Connor sent in Beale for 17-3.
Cardiff couldn't take a 20-minute advantage after loose forwards Richard Brown and Matt Hodgson were sinbinned.
