Waratahs ride past Chiefs
THE New South Wales Waratahs took advantage of a disputed penalty try in the first half to beat the Waikato Chiefs 23-16 in Super 15 rugby yesterday.
South African referee Jaco Peyper first sin-binned Chiefs prop Nathan White, then awarded a penalty try to the Waratahs after a long series of scrums near the Chiefs line around the 26th minute.
Peyper judged the Chiefs, scrummaging with only seven forwards, deliberately collapsed a scrum but television replays suggested the Waratahs, for whom scrummaging has often been a weakness, took the scrum to ground.
The contentious decision eventually separated the teams, who finished with a try apiece from general play.
The Waratahs had an overwhelming share of possession in the first half but created only one try through their own efforts, when winger Atieli Pakalani touched down after four minutes.
New South Wales applied constant pressure in the opening exchanges.
