Waratahs see off Brumbies
NEW South Wales Waratahs winger Lachlan Turner took a cross kick on his finger tips then tiptoed for 20 meters just centimeters from the sideline, to help his side to a 19-12 victory over the ACT Brumbies in Sydney yesterday.
Turner's try, from a pinpoint Berrick Barnes kick, put the Waratahs 10 points in front, a lead they never relinquished to move to 33 points in a congested top half of the Super 14 table.
The Bulls, who were playing later, the Canterbury Crusaders, the Queensland Reds and the Stormers are all on 34 points. The Wellington Hurricanes and the Brumbies are on 27 and still have a slim chance of making the top four.
"It was tough, both teams were desperate out there," Waratahs captain Phil Waugh said in a televised interview. "A lot was on the line and ... it was very physical."
The Waratahs went ahead 12-9 after a 47th-minute penalty to flyhalf Daniel Halangahu before Turner scored his fifth try of the season and 20th in Super rugby.
Halangahu converted to give the Waratahs a 19-9 lead, but Wallaby and ACT flyhalf Matt Giteau pulled the Brumbies to within a converted try 10 minutes later with his fourth penalty of the night.
Elsewhere, in Dunedin, New Zealand, the Wellington Hurricanes preserved a faint chance of reaching the semifinals by beating the Otago Highlanders 33-31 in a match in which both teams had four-try bonus points by halftime.
Fifty points were scored in the first half - Wellington led 26-24 at halftime - and each side scored a further try in the second half before the Hurricanes sealed their fifth win from 10 games.
Wellington flyhalf Aaron Cruden scored a try and set up two others.
The narrow difference between the teams yesterday ultimately was Cruden - the New Zealand under-20 flyhalf. He kicked four conversions while Otago fullback Israel Dagg managed three.
