Alinghi to skip 2013 America's Cup

SWITZERLAND'S Alinghi will not compete in the next America's Cup, turning its back on the sailing event it won in 2003 and 2007.

Alinghi was beaten by BMW Oracle in the 33rd America's Cup earlier this year in what was seen as a triumph of superior design and technology. This year's challenge, however, was overshadowed by more than two years of legal battles over race rules between software mogul Larry Ellison, head of BMW Oracle, and Alinghi's owner biotechnology billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli.

The 34th edition will be held in 2013 using wingsail catamarans in a rejigged format. Innovations will include a new class of boat, shorter races and independent race management with an international jury.

"After a careful evaluation of the protocol and other initiatives taken by the American Defender and its Challenger of Record, Alinghi considers that the existing conditions make it impossible for the team to participate in the 34th America's Cup. Alinghi remains interested in the America's Cup and will be closely following its developments but for the immediate future it will concentrate its efforts in other world class challenges," the team said.
