China Team aims for 2013 Cup
CHINA Team on Monday announced it will challenge for the America's Cup in 2013 in San Francisco.
China Team is the seventh syndicate to publicly announce its challenge. Two other groups have entered but won't announce their challenges until officials approve their paperwork.
The winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger series will meet defending champion Oracle Racing of San Francisco for the oldest trophy in international sports.
China Team made its America's Cup debut in 2007, finishing last in the Louis Vuitton Cup. Syndicate CEO Thierry Barot is recruiting international sailing champions to help train the crew.
"This America's Cup will feature the best sailors on the fastest boats, so we're very happy to be part of this adventure with China Team, a boat which will truly represent China, as most sailors will be Chinese", Wang Chao Yong, chairman of China Team, said, adding that team had the full support of the Chinese government.
China Team joins Italy's Mascalzone Latino, Team New Zealand, Team Australia, Artemis Challenge of Sweden, Aleph Team France and Energy Team of France as announced challengers.
An America's Cup World Series will begin this summer in 45-foot catamarans with wing sails. The Cup itself will be contested in 72-foot, wing-sailed catamarans, which will come on line next year.
