Olympic champion aims for the big race

FOUR years after winning an Olympic gold, Martin Kirketerp is cleaning a boat instead of sailing one, putting in long hours as he chases another dream - to sail around the world in the Volvo Ocean Race.

Kirketerp doesn't like to talk much about his Olympic triumph in 2008.

It's in keeping with the Dane's modest character, then, that while many of the elite field he beat in Beijing are preparing for the London Games, he is cheerfully working his way up from the bottom again as a member of the onshore staff of Team Sanya, the Chinese entry in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12.

"Winning the Olympic gold medal was the best feeling in the world, but competing in this race would give me the same kind of adrenaline rush," Kirketerp said.

"I have so much to learn about this type of boat and this is the best way of doing it. And I'm on hand in case an opportunity comes up. After winning the Olympic gold I had four months of jolly good times, but I grew up wanting to sail in the Volvo Ocean Race and by the end of 2008 the feeling came creeping back."
