Shanghai to host international regatta
SHANGHAI will hold the first international regatta in July as part of the 2015 International Marine Festival, organizers of the event announced yesterday.
The Shanghai Cup International Regatta will be held along the Huangpu River on July 10 and July 11, and will feature sailing teams from both home and abroad.
“We have studied previous statistics which showed that the water and wind condition of Huangpu River in July will suit the sport well,” said Stewart Hosford, managing director of Five West Ltd, a co-organizer.
“The Huangpu River is 300 meters wide and plenty of depth. There’s not much floating on the river, neither heavy waves. The tide is usually within two meters, and in July, there will be steady wind blowing from east along the river.”
One of the organizers, Shanghai Yuan Zhou Cultural Communication Co Ltd, claimed that a significant number of international sailing teams had showed interest in the Shanghai event. Six teams, including two Chinese, have already reached primary agreements. Other details, including the rules of the race, will be announced at a later date.
“Sailing is a charming sport that combines technology, human creativity and power of nature. Shanghai deserves an international regatta and this is just a beginning,” Hosford said yesterday.
