Team NZ, Mascalzone in semifinals
TEAM New Zealand and Italy's Mascalzone Latino advanced to the semifinals of the Louis Vuitton Trophy for America's Cup sailing teams yesterday in New Zealand.
Aleph of France and Russia's Synergy were knocked out in the first elimination round.
Top-seeded Team New Zealand beat No. 8 Synergy and No. 2 Mascalzone beat seventh-seeded Aleph in matchups dictated by standings at the end of an eight-team round robin.
Four other teams will race in a second elimination round today. The winners of each best-of-three match will join the New Zealand and Italian teams in the semifinals.
Sweden's Artemis, skippered by American Paul Cayard, will race TeamOrigin of Britain and the French-German team All4One, which had choice of opponent, will race Italy's Azzurra.
Artemis beat Azzurra and TeamOrigin beat All4One yesterday.
"It's a big breeze today and exciting for our fans," Cayard said.
"It's fantastic racing. We're flirting with that threshold of tolerable winds and so far so good, we're dancing on the right side of it. We're providing spectacular racing."
Mascalzone Latino finished with five wins and two losses in the round-robin racing and pulled off another impressive win yesterday, dominating the start against Aleph and leading around all marks.
Aleph blew out its gennaker at the top of the first downwind leg, to give up any winning chance.
Though the French team was eliminated, it left the regatta as the only team to beat Team New Zealand in the round robin. Mascalzone, skippered by New Zealand's Gavin Brady, continued to improve.
"We set the bar pretty low at the beginning of the event," Mascalzone tactician Morgan Larson said. "So we're definitely showing improvement.
