Chinese duo eyes home success
CHINA'S figure skating pair Pang Qing and Tong Jian are hoping to triumph in front of their home fans at the 2012 Cup Of China Grand Prix in Shanghai this weekend.
The Shanghai Oriental Sports Center will stage the 10th Cup of China figure skating from Friday to Sunday and the duo are keen to impress the crowd.
"The most important goal for us in Shanghai is to win the ticket to the final and we want the gold medal here," said Tong Jian.
"I wish all the Chinese skaters, especially the young ones, will have a good performance here in the home court."
The Shanghai grand prix has attracted 47 skaters from nine countries including Japan's Mao Asada and Daisuke Takahashi and Brian Joubert from France.
"It will be some challenge especially with the Canadian pair and the Russian one," Tong added.
"But a silver should be guaranteed."
Pang and Tong took the silver at the 2012 Skate America earlier this month and their coach Yao Bin expects them to do better.
"There're some new rules this year and Pang and Tong were not in their perfect shape in the last stop.
"But they'll get better with some adjustment," Yao said.
The Cup of China will also see the debut of another Chinese pair - Peng Cheng and Zhang Hao - who were just matched this summer.
"Peng and Zhang are doing good in difficulties but still need to improve in their stability," Yao said.
Tickets are available at www.228.com.cn from 30 yuan (US$4.8) to 580 yuan, the organizers said.
