Kim reunites with coaches
SOUTH Korean star Kim Yu-na said yesterday she was reuniting with two childhood coaches as she seeks to return to competitive strength after a long lay-off and with an eye on the 2014 Winter Olympics.
"What I lack the most is physical strength. I think I'm at 70 percent now," the reigning Olympic champion said.
"Technically, I still have a feel for jumps, and as long as I can get my strength back, there should be no problem," she added.
Kim's career has been the subject of intense speculation ever since she won gold in Vancouver in 2010, after which she admitted finding it difficult to remain motivated with the sport.
She finished second in the 2010 world championships and sat out the entire 2010-11 season before finishing runner-up again at the 2011 championships, after which she dropped out of competition once more.
To help her back to her peak, the 22-year-old said she has recruited two coaches, Shin Hye-sook and Ryu Jong-hyun, who played a formative role in moulding her as a young skater. "They helped me to become who I am in both technical and spiritual ways ever since I began figure skating," Kim said.
Kim has been training alone since her contract with former coach Peter Oppegard, the brother-in-law of US skating legend Michelle Kwan, ended last year.
