Koreans top Shanghai charts

South Korea edged China by 0.017 seconds to win the women’s 3,000-meter speedskating relay at the ISU Short-Track World Cup that ended in Shanghai last night.

The hosts brought home one gold, a silver and a bronze medal from the four-day event at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, ranking third in the standing, which was led by South Korea with five golds.

With a strong squad helmed by Winter Olympic champions Wang Meng and Zhou Yang, along with Li Jianrou and Fan Kexin, China led the four-team 3,000 relay final after the first turnaround. Coming into the 10th circle, South Korea benefited from a tussle between China and Italy to take over.

China adjusted its pace and retook the lead, until the last baton, when Wang came into a one-on-one clash with top Korean skater Shim Suk-hee, who edged ahead at the finish line.

The Koreans won in a time of 4 minutes, 10.264 seconds, 0.017 seconds ahead of China with Italy third and Canada fourth.

The United States won the men’s 5,000 relay, during which China’s Liang Wenhao lost his balance and fell off the track in the latter part. South Korea and Canada, took the silver and bronze, respectively.

In individual events, Li won a bronze in the women’s 1,000 in which neither Wang nor Zhou managed to reach the final.

The men’s 1,000 title went to Charles Hamelin of Canada with Korean Shim taking the women’s event. Both skaters left Shanghai with two golds.

The Shanghai event served as a warm-up for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games for the Chinese speedskating team, according to head coach Li Yan, who fielded his main contingent for Sochi next year. Among them, only Wang, Zhou and Liang participated in the last Winter Games at Vancouver in 2010.

Li suggested that the climate in Shanghai was similar to that in the Russian city making it a good conditioning for the team while it also boasts one of the fastest ice rings in the country.

The speedskating team will return to Shanghai in January for the final of the national league, and then set off for the Winter Games directly.

The Shanghai event is the first leg of the four-stop World Cup series, which now heads to Seoul in South Korea from October 3 to 6.

The last two stops in Torino, Italy, and Kolomna, Russia, in November will serve as qualifying events for the Sochi Games.
