Shimizu retires

FORMER Japanese Olympic speedskating champion Hiroyuki Shimizu has retired. The 36-year-old, who won the 500-meter gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, retired after failing to make Japan's team for the Vancouver Olympics. "I had a great career in the sport," Shimizu said yesterday at a retirement ceremony in his hometown of Obihiro.
