Skaters to compete in Shanghai

JAPANESE figure skating stars will take part in the Cup of China in Shanghai next weekend as planned.

"The Chinese skating federation, wishing to host as many international competitions as possible, has told us it will put its prestige on ensuring safety," Japan Skating Federation president Seiko Hashimoto said.

"We have checked every possible thing," she said, adding that her federation has determined it is "all right" to send its skaters to the November 2-4 Cup of China, the third leg of this year's Grand Prix series.

The Japanese federation will assign two bodyguards and two Chinese-speaking coordinators to the Japanese team, which includes former women's world champion Mao Asada and former men's world champion Daisuke Takahashi.

Japan and China have sparred recently over territorial row.

In Windsor, Ontario, on Saturday, Spain's Javier Fernandez won the Skate Canada men's title, upsetting two-time world champion Patrick Chan in his own country.

Fernandez finished with 253.94 points. That was 10 points better than Chan, who had won the last three Skate Canada titles.
