South Korean skaters set sizzling Shanghai pace
SOUTH Korean skaters stole the spotlight at the ISU Short Track speedskating World Cup's Shanghai leg yesterday, claiming two gold medals and setting a new world record.
After breaking the men's 5,000-meter relay world record on Friday's preliminary round, South Korea celebrated another world record yesterday as world champion Noh Jin-kyu won the men's 1,500 title in two minutes and 9.041 seconds, which lowered the mark of 2:10.639 set by his countryman Ahn Hyun-soo in October 2003 in Marquette, the United States.
"I thought about breaking the world record before the final, and I did it," said the gold medalist. "The ice of the stadium is very good."
Noh also won the 1,000 and 3,000 race at the 2011 short track world championships.
Canada's Charles Hamelin took the silver in 2:09.098, while the bronze also went to South Korea as Kuak Yoon-gy finished in 2:09.548. Chinese Song Weilong was the fourth in 2:09.995.
South Korea also clinched the women's 1,500 gold as Cho Ha-ri led throughout the race to finish in 2:22.473. Katherine Reutter of the US took silver in 2:22.764, while Chinese Xiao Han settled for bronze in 2:23.061.
"I had very good results here last year," said Cho. "So I am very happy to be here again and win a gold."
China's young star, 18-year-old Fan Kexin finished first in the women's 500. Fan trailed teammate Liu Qiuhong at the beginning but won on the last lap in 43.873 seconds.
Liu took silver in 43.959, with Jessica Smith of the US taking bronze in 45.338.
China should have swept the podium but Zhao Nannan fell on the last lap and only finished fifth.
"I performed well today," said Fan. "The result was my season's best. The medal gives me much confidence."
Canada also pocketed a gold as Jean Olivier won the men's 500 in 41.073, while China's Gong Qiuwen finished second in 41.516. Daan Breeuwsma of the Netherlands was third in 41.667.
