MARK Tuitert of the Netherlands was the surprise winner of the men's 1,500 metres speedskating at the Richmond Olympic Oval yesterday.
The 19-year-old, ranked fifth in the world, claimed the gold with a time of one minute 45.57 seconds to upset world champion and record holder Shani Davis of the United States.
Davis, struggling over the last lap, finished second in 1:46.10.
Third place went to Norway's Havard Bokko in 1:46.13.
