Wang hurts hands in another brawl
AN argument among China's speed-skating world championship team has resulted in four-time Olympic gold medallist Wang Meng needing 10 stitches on her hands.
The incident happened after several team members broke a 10pm curfew that had been imposed after a previous incident in June in which team members reportedly clashed with police.
The latest incident involved several squad members and happened last Sunday in the eastern coastal city of Qingdao, where the team was training.
Wang accidentally cut her hands on glass during the incident and the 26-year-old needed stitches in the hospital. She is China's most decorated Winter Olympic athlete, after winning three golds at the Vancouver Games last year, and one gold, a silver and a bronze at Turin in 2006.
The incident happened less than 50 days after Wang was involved in another scrimmage in Lijiang in southwest China's Yunnan Province last June.
Late on Sunday night, Wang Meng, accompanied with another Olympic gold medalist Zhou Yang, as well as teammates Liu Qiuhong, Liu Xianwei, Han Jialiang and Liang Wenhao, returned to the camp drunk, and was reprimanded by team manager Wang Chunlu.
It soon turned out of control as Wang Meng punched Wang Chunlu as Liu Xianwei also got into the act.
The coaching staff pulled the two sides apart. The bad-tempered Wang Meng smashed furniture in her dormitory room during which she injured both her hands.
The 26-year-old was then sent to hospital for treatment and needed 10 stitches.
Four days after the brawl none of those involved would comment.
A source at the China's State Sport General Administration said officials from the sport's governing body left for Qingdao to probe into the incident.
In June, Wang Meng and other short track skater were also involved in an altercation in Lijiang with the local police while celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival at a local pub.
Wang and Zhou posted angry words and pictures in their microblogs, claiming the team got beaten up by cops while local doctors were indifferent to their injured teammates at the hospital. Media reports then said that at least 10 athletes were hurt in the brawl.
Local police said the skaters violated local regulations which prohibit noise and commotion after midnight. The incident led to criticism of the skaters.
The short track speed skating team won four gold medals at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games last year with Wang Meng clinching three for herself.
