Cuche triumphs, Vonn takes lead

SWITZERLAND'S Didier Cuche won Alpine skiing's downhill World Cup at the age of 36 yesterday, snatching the title from the clutches of retiring Michael Walchhofer in the last race of the season.

Cuche finished joint fourth, a tremendous performance on a course favoring early starters, to leap-frog Walchhofer in the standings and take the title for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

The Austrian, three-time World Cup winner earlier in his career, led the standings going into the race in Switzerland but could finish only 11th.

Frenchman Adrien Theaux won the race, his first victory in a World Cup race in any discipline, while Austrian Joachim Puchner was second and Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal was third.

Cuche, starting 22nd out of 23, topped the downhill standings with 510 points while Walchhofer, who raced immediately before him, finished with 498 and Austria's Klaus Kroell was third on 411.

In the women's event, Lindsey Vonn took the lead from Maria Riesch in their duel for the overall World Cup title, finishing fourth behind winner Julia Mancuso in the season's last downhill.

Vonn earned 50 race points for her lowest downhill placing this season, while Riesch failed to score in 17th place. Riesch's cautious run left her a surprising 3.19 seconds behind Mancuso.

The American racer now has 1,705 points to the German's 1,678 with three races left this week.
