Ganong, Hector seal debut wins

TRAVIS Ganong opened his World Cup account yesterday, the United States skier winning the men’s downhill at Santa Caterina di Valfurva.

The 26-year-old was joined on the podium in Italy by Austrian Olympic champion Matthias Mayer, second at nine hundredths of a second, and local hope Dominik Paris.

Norway’s Kjetil Jansrud, who leads the World Cup downhill and overall standings, had an off day, trailing in 15th, over one second off the pace.

Up to now Jansrud has finished in the top three in all the downhills staged so far this season — winning in Lake Louise and Beavers Creek, and taking second at Val Gardena.

Despite his lowly finish he remained top of both sets of standings. He leads the downhill classifications on 626 points by 50 from Austrian Marcel Hirscher, and the overall on 296 points from Paris (220) and Steven Nyman (195).

Ganong took fifth in the downhill at the Sochi Olympics while his previous best placing on the World Cup circuit was a third at Kvitfjell in February.

The men’s World Cup circuit continues with a slalom in Zagreb, Croatia, on January 6, while the next downhill is scheduled for Wengen on January 17.

In Kuhtai, Austria, Sweden’s Sara Hector also opened her World Cup account yesterday by winning the giant slalom.

The 22-year-old clocked a time of 2 minutes, 17.61 seconds to beat Anna Fenninger of Austria by 0.09 seconds.

American teen Mikaela Shiffrin, who led after the opening run, came 0.18 behind in third.

Tina Maze of Slovenia was 0.68 behind in seventh and remained in the lead of the overall standings.

Hector’s win came just over two weeks after she earned her first career World Cup podium, coming second in a GS in Are, Sweden.

This leg of the World Cup season was switched after poor snow cover at the original venue of Semmering.
