Goergl wins as Austrians finish 1-2

Elisabeth Goergl beat Anna Fenninger for an Austrian 1-2 finish at a women’s World Cup downhill yesterday in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria.

Goergl, the 2011 world champion, started 28th when the other top contenders had completed their race but led the field throughout.

Goergl finished the demanding 3-kilometer Kaelberloch course in 1 minute, 47.45 seconds to deny Fenninger her first career downhill win by 0.56 seconds.

Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany, who has won two downhills this season, finished 0.63 behind in third and lost her lead in the overall standings to Fenninger by six points, 677-671.

It was the first downhill victory for an Austrian woman since Goergl won in Bad Kleinkirchheim two years ago.

On the men’s circuit, Felix Neureuther overcame a massive first-run deficit to win a World Cup giant slalom yesterday in Adelboden, Switzerland. It was his second consecutive victory to start this year.

The German was only seventh fastest in the morning and overcame fading sunshine in the afternoon to finish 0.10 ahead of first-run leader Thomas Fanara of France.

Marcel Hirscher of Austria was third, 0.19 behind Neureuther’s combined time of 2 minutes 34.60 seconds.

Ted Ligety, who was sitting third, skied out when rocked by a bump approaching a gate midway down.

It was Neureuther’s first GS victory, and seventh career World Cup win overall following his slalom triumph on Monday in Bormio, Italy.

Ligety and Hirscher had combined to win the first four GS races this season.

Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway placed 12th and retained his lead in the overall World Cup standings.
