Hirscher tops overall standings

MARCEL Hirscher overcame a rapidly deteriorating course to win a men's World Cup night slalom on Thursday in Zagreb, Croatia, and move to the top of the overall standings.

The Austrian, who led after the first run, finished in a combined time of 1 minute, 51.84 seconds in warm temperatures to beat Felix Neureuther of Germany by 0.29. Defending overall champion Ivica Kostelic of Croatia was 0.48 behind in third.

"It was really difficult to race here," Hirscher, who also won a slalom in Alta Badia, Italy, in December, said of the climate in Zagreb. "I went to the limit, came close to skiing out, but taking the risks has paid off."

After the first run, Hirscher said he "was lucky to get bib No. 1 ... Especially for starters 10 to 15, nothing was possible."

In the standings, the Austrian overtook Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who skipped the race. Hirscher has 525 points, followed by Svindal with 456, Ted Ligety of the United States with 403 and Kostelic with 389.

Kostelic had a top-three finish on his home hill for a fourth time. He's never won the race.
