Hoefl-Riesch shines in slalom
GERMANY'S Maria Hoefl-Riesch racked up her 24th World Cup victory yesterday when she won the opening slalom of the season in Levi, Finland, in what was her third win on the 'Black Piste'.
The 27-year-old two-time Olympic champion - she won gold medals in both the slalom and the combined in the 2010 edition in Vancouver, Canada, - beat Finland's Tanja Poutiainen and young American Mikaela Schiffrin by 55 hundredths and 74 hundredths of a second, respectively.
Pre-race favorite Marlies Schild of Austria will have to wait to equal the all-time slalom victory of 34 held by Swiss great Vreni Vreni Schneider as she crashed out on the first leg.
Hoefl-Riesch, who had previously won in Levi in 2004 and 2009 and also has three podium finishes to her credit, had been second fastest behind Poutiainen in the first leg.
However, she showed few signs of the painful hip she had been complaining of last week as she eased to victory in the second run. "I had already said before the race that I had managed to train without feeling any pain in the past few days," she said.
American superstar Lindsey Vonn gave the race a miss in order to focus on the giant slalom and slalom set for Aspen, Colorado, on November 24-25.
Winner of the opening giant slalom in Soelden a fortnight ago, Slovenia's Tina Maze finished fourth to increase her lead in the overall World Cup standings to 150 points. She leads Hoefl-Riesch by 26 points.
