Hoefl-Riesch wins Sochi downhill, Vonn captures cup
AMERICAN Lindsey Vonn left the day's laurels to arch-rival Maria Hoefl-Riesch yesterday but earned the consolation of her fifth Alpine ski downhill World Cup in succession.
Third behind the German in the downhill held on the course of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Vonn still emerged with a 231-point lead in the discipline's standings with two events left in the season.
Impressive in practice, Vonn was below par on race day while Hoefl-Riesch, by contrast, finally looked back to her familiar best after going through a slump since winning the overall World Cup last season.
Hoefl-Riesch, who married her manager Marcus Hoefl and lost some eight kilograms in the offseason, signaled her return to form last month by winning a super-combined in St Moritz for her first victory of the season.
Her performance in the new resort of Rosa Khutor was even more convincing as she easily beat world champion Elisabeth Goergl of Austria and Olympic gold medalist Vonn.
Hoefl-Riesch bagged her 22nd career victory, the eighth in a downhill, with a time of one minute 49.17 seconds.
Goergl finished 0.43 seconds adrift, while Vonn was 0.59 off the pace.
In the race for the overall cup, Vonn still has a comfortable, 448-point lead over Slovenia's Tina Maze.
