Injured Vonn out of worlds
AMERICAN Lindsey Vonn pulled out of the world championships on Monday, a day after winning silver in the downhill.
The Olympic downhill champion, recovering from concussion after a training accident two weeks ago, said she wanted to concentrate on winning her fourth successive overall World Cup title instead.
"Coming into these championships, my plan was to race in all of the events, but I've decided to take this week off from competition in order to get back to 100 percent," she said on her Facebook page.
Vonn was a disappointing seventh in last week's super-G despite an injury which she says took away her concentration and drive, and failed to complete the super combined on Friday. She will miss this week's slalom and giant slalom.
"It's been a really difficult few weeks and at every stage, I've had 100 percent confidence in the medical advice I've been provided with and believe we've made the right decisions," she said. "I'm a competitor and I love to race, that's what makes this a really tough choice, but I do feel it's the right one."
The World Cup is held over the entire season while the world championships are a bi-annual event.
Many skiers see the World Cup as more important because it demands consistency and good results over a whole season and in a variety of disciplines.
Croatia's Ivica Kostelic has missed part of the world championships to concentrate on the men's World Cup, which he leads, but will return to race in the giant slalom and slalom later this week. Defending World Cup champion Carlo Janka of Switzerland has also skipped part of the two-week long championships.
