Janka wins Wengen downhill but Miller crashes
SWITZERLAND'S Carlo Janka continued his impressive World Cup season by winning the prestigious downhill at Wengen yesterday while twice former champion Bode Miller crashed meters from the finish.
The 23-year-old Swiss completed the 4.46-kilometer Lauberhorn course in two minutes 32.23 seconds, 0.66 seconds ahead of the rest of the course, to add to his hat-trick of wins at Beaver Creek earlier in the season.
"Winning in Wengen is the dream of any Swiss skier," said Janka, who was competing in the Lauberhorn race for just the second time.
Janka was 0.66 seconds faster than Manuel Osborne-Paradis of Canada, and Marco Buechel of Liechtenstein was 0.82 back in third.
Miller, who won Friday's super combined to notch his first World Cup win for nearly two years, was fastest when he crashed, having bettered Buechel by 0.25 seconds at the last checkpoint, although it was unlikely he'd have beaten Janka who raced afterwards.
Janka's fourth victory of the season gave him the lead in the overall World Cup standings. He has 757 points, 68 more than Austrian technical specialist Benjamin Raich, who skipped yesterday's race.
In Maribor, Slovenia, Kathrin Zettel of Austria won a women's World Cup giant slalom yesterday, and Lindsey Vonn of the United States crashed three gates before the finish but stayed unhurt.
Zettel finished the Pohorje 2 course in a two-run combined time of two minutes, 36.22 seconds for her first win of the season and seventh overall.
Maria Riesch of Germany took second, 0.23 behind, and Anja Paerson of Sweden was 0.48 back in third.
Vonn has never had a GS podium finish but was second after the opening run. She kept the lead in the overall standings, although Riesch cut her deficit to 32 points.
