Race off; WCup downhill titles for Svindal, Vonn
FOG forced the cancellation of the final downhill race of the season yesterday, giving Aksel Lund Svindal his first season-long title in the discipline.
The tall Norwegian maintained his 58-point lead over defending champion Klaus Kroell of Austria. Svindal already has won the crystal globe trophy in super-G.
Fog shrouded parts of the Lenzerheide slope in Switzerland and fans in the grandstands couldn't see the finish line. The canceled men's race prevented Svindal from scoring points to close the gap on overall leader Marcel Hirscher of Austria. Hirscher, the defending champion, leads Svindal by 149 with three races left this week.
With the women's downhill also cancelled later, American Lindsey Vonn, out with an injury, claimed her sixth straight World Cup downhill title.
