Schild claims 30th career slalom
WORLD champion Marlies Schild was in a class of her own once more when she won her second slalom of the season yesterday in Courchevel, France, and the 30th of her career
The Austrian was almost two seconds quicker than her rivals in a combined time of one minute and 42.64.
Finn Tanja Poutiainen finished 1.87 seconds behind the undisputed slalom queen. Schild is now only four short of Swiss Vreni Schneider's record of 34 slalom wins.
Austrian Kathrin Zettel was third, 2.19 behind, for her first podium of the winter.
"The main problem today was the changing conditions. In both legs, the early starters were favored. But I cannot complain," said Schild, winner of the opening slalom of the season in Aspen, Colorado, three weeks ago.
"I cannot really explain why I win by such big margins. I just ski the way I know and once again, it worked."
American World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn, winner of five races this season, had a promising start in the first leg before missing a gate.
The next leg of the women's World Cup is the classic floodlit slalom in Flachau, Austria, tomorrow.
In Alta Badia, Italy, Massimiliano Blardone left two seasons of doubts behind him when he won the classic Alta Badia giant slalom for the third time yesterday.
Home snow inspired the 32-year-old Italian, whose last World Cup victory was on the same course two years ago.
In a combined time of two minutes and 46.49 seconds, Blardone repeated his 2005 and 2009 victories and is one short of Alberto Tomba's record of four wins in the Dolomites resort.
Austria's Hannes Reichelt was second, 0.35 seconds behind, with compatriot Philipp Shoerghofer third.
