Schild defends slalom crown with third-place finish

AUSTRIAN Marlies Schild defended her World Cup slalom crystal globe after her third-place finish in Ofterschwang, Germany, yesterday guaranteed her victory with two races left.

Canada's Erin Mielzynski won the two-leg event with a combined time of 1 minute 53.59 seconds, with American Resi Stiegler second, 0.05 seconds behind, and Schild a further 0.02 seconds adrift.

Schild, who has won six of the eight slaloms this season, has now notched up 660 points to put her beyond the reach of Slovenia's Tina Maze (361 points) and Austrian Michaela Kirchgasser (334) who is third.

In Kvitfjell, Norway, Kjetil Jansrud finally earned the success he deserved by winning a super-G yesterday for his first World Cup victory after nine podium finishes.

The 26-year-old Norwegian won in 1.34.02 to cap a weekend that included third place in Friday's super-G and second in Saturday's downhill.

Compatriot Aksel Lund Svindal was second, 0.21 behind.
