Schild wins World Cup night slalom

MARLIES Schild of Austria won the women's World Cup night slalom in Flachau, Austria, on Tuesday for her second win of the season and 22nd overall. Schild, who was fifth after the opening leg, finished in a combined 1 minute, 37.89 seconds.

"I never thought it was possible (to win)," said Schild, who had 1.04 seconds to make up in the second run. "But you should never start calculating. I just didn't want to think about the huge deficit and I managed to put it out of my mind."

Maria Riesch of Germany was second, 0.34 seconds behind. Austria's Kathrin Zettel was 0.42 back in third for her seventh podium finish on the season.

Maria's sister Susanne Riesch, who led after the opening run, straddled a gate early in her second run.

Overall World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn, who won three speed races last weekend, skied out halfway down the Griessenkar course. The American fell after straddling a gate and losing her right ski but was unhurt. Vonn kept the lead in the overall standings. Main rival Maria Riesch was 112 points behind.

Sandrine Aubert of France, who won two slaloms this season, straddled the final gate and also missed the second run.

Slalom world champion Maria Riesch overtook Aubert on top of the slalom standings with 373 points. Second-placed Schild had 320, and Aubert was third with 316.

Schild had a flawless run to become the only skier to finish the course in less than 50 seconds.

"After the first run I was really angry with myself," said Schild, who missed the entire past season after breaking her left leg.

"I tried to race differently in the second run, to be a bit more sensitive."
