Shiffrin at it again with slalom title
OLYMPIC champion Mikaela Shiffrin won a World Cup slalom in Are, Sweden, yesterday to retain her season-long title with one race remaining.
In her first slalom race since taking Olympic gold, Shiffrin led from start to finish just as she did at Sochi two weeks ago.
The 18-year-old American had a combined time of 1 minute, 50.66 seconds, 0.60 ahead of Maria Pietilae-Holmner of Sweden. Another Swede, Anna Swenn-Larsson, placed third trailing Shiffrin by 1.50.
Shiffrin earned 100 World Cup points for her fourth victory of the season and moved 130 clear of Frida Hansdotter of Sweden, who placed fourth.
Maria Hoefl-Riesch was seventh to retake the overall standings lead from Anna Fenninger of Austria, who does not race slalom. The final four races are scheduled this week at Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
Meanwhile, giant slalom Olympic champion Ted Ligety recorded his 22nd World Cup victory yesterday as he won the Kranjska Gora race in Slovenia.
The 29-year-old American won in a combined time of 2:30.80, beating Austrian veteran Benjamin Raich by 0.18 seconds. Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen finished third, 0.25 slower.
