Slalom title for Schild, Kostelic takes Cup
AUSTRIAN Marlies Schild claimed the slalom World Cup crown after victory in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, yesterday, as Lindsey Vonn cut Maria Riesch's lead in the overall standings to 23 points.
World champion Schild won in a combined time of one minute and 43.85 seconds, 0.93 seconds ahead of her compatriot Kathrin Zettel and 1.16 seconds in front of Tina Maze of Slovenia.
Schild now has an unassailable 111-point lead over Finland's Tanja Poutiainen, who only managed ninth place, heading into the last slalom of the season this week in Switzerland.
"It's another win that wasn't easy. I didn't even know I had won the World Cup. Someone told me at the end. I feel very proud because I had an amazing season," Schild, who won six out of eight slaloms this season, said.
With four races to go before the end of the season, American Vonn cut further into Riesch's lead in the race for the overall title by taking 16th place as her German rival failed to score any points.
Straddled a gate
Riesch straddled a gate in the early seconds of the second run and was eliminated.
Vonn has already claimed three globes this season; downhill, super-G and combined.
In Kvitfjell, Norway, Ivica Kostelic won the overall World Cup yesterday after taking an unassailable lead in the standings with five races to go.
A 20th-place finish in yesterday's downhill was enough to put the Croat more than 500 points clear of Switzerland's Didier Cuche.
Kostelic, whose sister Janica won the overall women's World Cups three times, won seven races this season, all since the turn of the year, as he became the first Croat to win the men's title.
Austria's Michael Walchhofer won the race, his third victory in a downhill this season, one week before the 35-year-old's retirement.
Walchhofer covered the Olympiabakken course in 1.45.92, beating compatriot Klaus Kroell by 0.13 seconds.
Swiss Beat Feuz, who won Friday's downhill, had another impressive run and finished third, 0.31 behind the winner.
