Swede wins giant slalom in Colorado

Jessica Lindell-Vikarby won the women’s World Cup giant slalom at Beaver Creek, Colorado, on Sunday, the second World Cup race win of the Swede’s career.
With her only previous World Cup win four years behind her, the 29-year-old admitted that the butterflies built up as she prepared to defend her first-leg lead in the decisive second run.
But she stormed home to edge US starlet Mikaela Shiffrin in a combined time of 2 minutes, 17.92 seconds.
Shiffrin, treated to a hero’s welcome by fans after she briefly moved into the top spot, settled for the second step of the podium just 0.09 seconds back.
Liechtenstein’s Tina Weirather was third, 0.56 adrift.
“I’m feeling great!” Lindell-Vikarby said. “It was a pure pleasure to be in the lead when you came down the first run and then the second. It’s a long wait between runs and I was for sure a bit nervous, but I made it.”
Lindell-Vikarby’s only prior World Cup win was a super-G triumph at Cortina-d’Ampezzo, Italy, in January 2009.
Shiffrin, the 18-year-old winner of the season’s first slalom at Levi, Finland, earlier this month, also notched her first giant slalom podium finish.
At Lake Louise, Canada, Aksel Lund Svindal won the men’s alpine World Cup super-G on Sunday on an Olympic course the Norwegian has made his own.
Svindal clocked 1:28.53 to beat Austrian duo Matthias Mayer and Georg Streitberger by 0.24 and 0.38 seconds, respectively.
Svindal notched his 22nd World Cup victory, surpassing Kjetil Andre Aamodt’s Norwegian record. “I think it’s cool,” he said of the record. “It is something to know that my idol is at home and that I beat his record.”
Svindal notched his sixth win at Lake Louise, five of those coming in the super-G, which he also won here in 2005, 2007, 2011 and 2012.
