Twin delight for Vonn, Cuche

LINDSEY Vonn made it a perfect five wins in five World Cup downhills this season with another decisive victory in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, yesterday.

The American also tied Janica Kostelic with her 30th career victory, good for eighth place on the all-time list and nearly halfway to Austrian leader Annemarie Moser-Proell's 62 career wins.

Following her super-G victory on Friday, Vonn sped down the Olympia delle Tofane course in 1 minute, 37.70 seconds. Maria Riesch of Germany finished second, 0.42 seconds behind, with Sweden's Anja Paerson and Swiss racer Nadja Kamer tied for third, 0.86 seconds back.

Before the Vancouver Olympics open on February 12, only one more stop remains on the women's calendar - in St Moritz, Switzerland, this weekend.

Vonn was the last top-ranked skier to start and was slightly slower than Riesch through the first two checkpoints, but the Minnesota native skied the bottom section of the twisting layout nearly half a second faster than her German rival and good friend.

Vonn started celebrating even before she came to a stop and now has eight wins overall this season, putting her within one victory of her personal mark of nine race wins a year ago.

Vonn increased her lead over Riesch in the overall point standings to 1,094-1,018. In downhill, Vonn has a perfect 500 points, with Riesch in second with 316 points.

"It's been amazing, a great weekend. I love racing at Cortina. Things couldn't have gone better," a smiling Vonn told reporters with one eye on today's giant slalom.

"I feel really strong right now. I'm skiing with confidence and I always attack."

In Kitzbuehel, Austria, Didier Cuche won a men's World Cup downhill on the Streif course yesterday, one day after winning a super-G race.

Cuche sped down the 3,312-meter course in 1:53.74 for his fourth win of the season. It was the 35-year-old Swiss skier's third victory at the classic downhill race after winning in 1998 and 2008.

He became only the third skier after Austrian greats Hermann Maier and Stephen Eberharter to win two Hahnenkamm races in one weekend.

Slovenia's Andrej Sporn was 0.28 back in second for his first career podium finish. Werner Heel of Italy took third, 0.39 behind.

"It's incredible, I was thinking about winning the double yesterday," Cuche said. "At the start, I was pretty relaxed and I knew I had to attack. I made no mistake so it was a huge relief to reach the finish."

Carlo Janko of Switzerland finished 1.25 back in 11th and kept the lead in the overall standings ahead of Benjamin Raich of Austria, 793-743. Cuche is third with 726.
